Custom Aquarium Design

A functional aquarium tank design needs three elements working together to create a livable environment: water movement, lighting and filtration. How these elements are incorporated into a specific tank design depends largely on the type of fish and whether the system is intended to be a fish-only environment, or if algae-producing live rock will be added.

In general, filtration systems are primarily mechanical, though advanced designs allow for the natural filtration provided by the algae on live rocks. The former style tends to be lower maintenance, since algae levels don’t have to be monitored as closely, if at all.

The importance of good water movement in an aquarium cannot be underestimated. Not only does proper water circulation ease the burden on the filtration system, it also enhances the oxygen exchange process for the fish living in the tank. Most aquariums employ either a power-driven air pump or a bubble wand, depending on the size of the unit and the needs of the fish it hosts.

Strictly speaking, the fish living in the aquarium tank don’t need lighting in order to survive. However, lighting is a critical element of the unit’s architecture because it can influence the temperature of the water. If lighting accessories make the water too warm for the fish, a cooling mechanism must be incorporated to offset this.
